Reagan UCLA hospital suffers several cost overruns and construction delays after flood
Flooding from a faultily installed commercial coffee maker will postpone the planned May 4 opening of the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, which has suffered several cost overruns and construction delays, officials said.
The 520-bed hospital was rescheduling a required pre-opening state health inspection planned for Thursday due to damage from the flooding on several floors, UCLA Hospital System chief executive David Feinberg said this week.
The hospital building, designed by I.M. Pei and his son, C.C. “Didi” Pei, was originally set to open in late 2004 to replace an old facility damaged by the 1994 Northridge earthquake.
But the opening has been thwarted by cost overruns and delays, which hospital officials have blamed on the rising costs of building materials and design changes to accommodate medical advances.
The medical center had a nearly $598 million budget in 1998 but that has grown to more than $829 million.
Hospital administrators said they are working state health officials to reschedule the inspection.
Feinberg said patients could begin moving to the new facility by late June.
